For this project I worked in collaboration with Tambo. They wanted a poster that would reflect their local culture
(Pemba, North Mozambique) and promote their annual festival, focusing on aspects of local Mozambican
traditions and art, but they also wanted the festival to have a look with a young feeling, reflecting new ways
of looking at the world and transforming through empowerment.
This was quite a lot to ask on very short notice... I decided to print on local capulanas (pieces of cloth used by
most Mozambican women for many different purposes: as skirts, dresses, hats, bags, as towels, to carry babies,
to sleep on...).
I asked people from Tambo to choose a few to silkscreen on. The capulanas gave the traditional and artistic look,
the lettering and image a more contemporary approach.
The idea was to save the posters from one year to the other and reduce costs.
